Gynecomastia is a common hormonal imbalance in men that makes one or both of the breasts bigger than normal. A breast reduction can make their chests firmer, flatter, and more contoured. The benefits of male breast reduction include increased self-esteem and improved interpersonal relationships. They also do not have to take too much time off of their normal schedules to recover, which takes about two weeks. Men may have the procedure under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia and a sedative. When the condition is mainly caused by excess glandular tissue, Dr. Carp will make an incision in the underarm area or on the edge of the areola. Then, he will remove the extra glandular tissue, skin and fat. Larger incisions might be needed for major breast reductions that require a significant amount of skin and tissue to be removed. When fatty tissue is the main cause, Dr. Carp may only use liposuction or combine the surgery with liposuction for optimum results. The nipples might need to be repositioned for men who suffer from sagging breasts. He could also insert a small drain through another incision to drain excess fluids before dressing the closed incisions.
